Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Technician in our Richmond, VA office. The position is on our project site and will assist with sample collection of diverse materials including, but not limited to, soil, sediment, water, and air for environmental tests; compile construction quality assurance (CQA) monitoring data related to landfill and environmental remediation construction projects, provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all field-related activities to senior level project personnel; and provide additional field and office support to geologists and engineers for a diverse private and public sector client base. The role requires the ability to comprehend construction plans and specifications and a strong willingness to perform extensive fieldwork and travel for extensive periods of time, including overnights, weekends, and holidays. An interest in building a career in the environmental consulting field is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform field and on-site laboratory tests on soil, geosynthetics, aggregates, and other materials primarily associated with landfill and/or waste containment system construction;
  • Monitor activities on job sites to assure compliance with relevant contract documents (e.g., technical specifications, construction drawings, sampling plans, CQA plans etc.);
  • Provide CQA monitoring on several types of construction and/or environmental activities on enviro-civil construction sites;
  • Prepare daily and weekly field reports, construction schedules & progress reports;
  • Assure project documentation is correct and consistent with company policy & procedures;
  • Interact with project personnel (contractors, project managers, engineers & clients) and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communications and participation in work progress meetings;
  • Assist in the preparation of the final reports, work plans, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices;
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific project health and safety plans and the company’s Environmental Health and Safety Management policies and procedures;
  • General liner installation techniques and respective equipment;
  • Familiar with applicable environmental and health & safety regulations and regulatory requirements;
  • Assist with the procurement of materials, equipment, and supplies for projects;
  • Required to complete project related paperwork neatly, timely, and accurately;
  • Understanding of the environmental health & safety regulations and perform work in a competent manner; and
  • Perform tasks in other company practice areas including general construction services, environmental sampling, contractor oversight, or construction quality assurance activities, as needed; and
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) (required) and a minimum of 2 years of applicable experience (preferred) or an associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college and the ability to monitor several different types of construction and environmental activities simultaneously.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, including survey and topographical drawings. (required)
  • Experience ensuring field activities comply with construction plans and specifications and the ability to monitor several different types of activities simultaneously. (required)
  • Experience with the operation of industry typical monitoring and data collection equipment, including but not limited laptop and handheld computers, Troxler moisture /density gauges, scales, Elkins or GEM, and other equipment. (required)
  • Experience with multi-media sampling including soil, water, and air. (preferred)
  • Practical field experience conducting operation and maintenance of mechanical systems including simple troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems. (preferred)
  • Exposure to the execution of in-situ and ex-situ remediation projects technologies such as chemical injection technologies, pump and treat systems, and landfill gas recovery systems. (preferred)
  • Experience working with and around heavy construction equipment and excavations on landfills, industrial sites, power plants, gold mines, and coal ash sites.
  • Liner experience. (valuable)
  • Familiarity with landfill work and various other project sites, including use of surveying equipment and blueprints. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with geosynthetic liner, density testing, and concrete testing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word software programs. (required)
  • Strong mathematical background with the ability to perform calculations in basic geometry and use of algebra. (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk long distances up and down steep slopes and varied outdoor terrain in different weather conditions. (required)
  • Availability to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary. Regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)
