Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Experienced Remediation Engineer or Geologist (Vapor Intrusion) to join its Northern California team, at our offices in Oakland or Walnut Creek, California. This position is ideal for an experienced professional interested in leading and delivering vapor intrusion (VI) investigations, risk evaluations, and mitigation projects as part of our environmental site assessment, remediation, risk, and engineering practices in the region. Responsibilities include technical leadership, project delivery, permitting/regulatory coordination, and implementation of VI mitigation and remediation systems. Our client base includes a diverse mix of industrial, commercial, and governmental clients. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage VI remediation and mitigation tasks/projects, including scope development, work planning, budget and schedule management, design implementation, subcontractor oversight, and client communication to achieve technical and financial objectives.
- Develop VI conceptual site models (CSMs) and investigation/mitigation strategies, including sub-slab soil gas, soil gas, indoor air, and building survey approaches, consistent with applicable state and federal guidance and site-specific conditions.
- Lead the preparation of VI work plans and technical memoranda; evaluate and interpret analytical data; perform screening-level and refined VI risk evaluations; and develop clear, defensible conclusions and recommendations.
- Oversee pilot studies and full-scale VI mitigation/remediation implementation, including system selection and design (e.g., active/passive sub-slab depressurization, engineering controls), contractor procurement, permitting, construction oversight, commissioning, and operations & maintenance (O&M) support.
- Prepare and review technical deliverables (reports, letters, memoranda, sampling and analysis plans, mitigation designs/specifications, O&M plans, and proposals); provide technical review/approval of project team work products.
- Support growth of a VI client base by leading proposal development, pursuing repeat work, identifying new opportunities, and following through on personal business development goals.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, property owners/tenants, and other stakeholders; communicate VI concepts, findings, and mitigation approaches clearly and credibly.
- Mentor, support, and motivate early career staff in technical delivery and project performance, including VI sampling programs, data quality review, mitigation system evaluations, client expectations, and career growth.
- At times, this position may also include fieldwork, including site visits, multi-media environmental sampling and characterization, drilling oversight, contractor oversight, and remediation system operations, maintenance, and construction.
- Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.
Education and Licensure
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, chemical, or environmental preferred), geology, or earth science (required)
- Advanced degree in the same (preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) licensure. (required)
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- At least 7 years of direct environmental consulting experience with a focus on VI assessment and mitigation; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
- Strong technical foundation in remediation/engineering or geology (required), with demonstrated competency in VI approaches and related remedial technologies (e.g., soil vapor extraction, in situ injections). (required)
- Experience managing projects, including responsibility for resource allocation, quality, technical oversight, subcontractor/contractor coordination, and financial management. (required)
- Thorough understanding of CalEPA and USEPA regulations and guidance relevant to VI and remediation (required), including experience working with state/local oversight agencies.
- Experience mentoring and managing professional staff. (required)
- Excellent technical leadership of multi-disciplinary teams. (required)
- Experience with VI data evaluation tools and approaches (required)
- Self-starter with ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple project assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client facilities as needed. (required)
- Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
- Field work and overnight travel may be required.
- Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may be required
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.
- Minimum Salary: $106,275/year / Maximum Salary: $152,575/year (Oakland, Walnut Creek)
- Minimum Salary: $101,650/year / Maximum Salary: $145,940year (Sacramento)
